Job Summary

The Assistant Dean for Strategic Initiatives reports to the Dean of the School of Social Work and will play a critical role in helping the dean with the effective functioning and advancement of the School of Social Work. This will include helping the dean prioritize and make best use of his time, providing strategic and analytical support to the dean, managing certain special projects, and helping the dean’s office and leadership team function as effectively as possible. The Assistant Dean for Strategic Initiatives will also lead efforts to operationalize the dean’s vision by leading workgroups, coordinating specific projects and initiatives, and project management. The ideal candidate will possess a combination of leadership skills, evaluation skills, operational acumen, and a deep understanding of higher education.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Strategic Planning
  • Collaborate with the dean and other key stakeholders to develop and implement strategic plans aligned with the School’s mission, vision, and goals.

  • Conduct research and analysis to identify emerging trends, opportunities, and challenges in social work education and practice.

  • Provide recommendations for strategic priorities and initiatives to enhance the School’s reputation, effectiveness, and impact.

  • Assist in setting priorities, establishing goals, and tracking progress towards key objectives.

  1. Operational Oversight
  • Oversee strategic operations of the School of Social Work, ensuring efficient and effective functioning across all departments and programs.

  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and systems to streamline operations and enhance organizational effectiveness.

  1. Stakeholder Engagement
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, community partners, and funders.

  • Serve as a liaison between the School of Social Work and external organizations.

  • Represent the School at meetings, conferences, and events to promote its mission, achievements, and contributions.

  1. Leadership and Management
  • Oversee the strategic operations of the Dean’s Office.

  • Assist the dean to prioritize and make the best and most efficient use of time.

  • Assists with fielding incoming requests, issues, and decision, helping the dean prioritize which responses and actions are needed when and tracking and coordinating the various tasks.

  • Attend certain meetings to capture notes and follow up on key action items or supervises others in so doing.

  • Manage special projects and initiatives as assigned by the dean, ensuring timely completion and effective implementation.

  • Track information for the dean.

  • Gathers information, coordinates with different involved parties, develops and monitors execution plans, and tracks responsibilities.

  • Provide an independent perspective, which may include providing observations regarding key dynamics during meetings, challenging the dean’s assumptions, or sharing relevant information of which the dean may not be aware.

  • Collaborate with the Dean’s Leadership Team to devise a formal staff mentoring program to support staff in achieving their professional development goals and advancing the School’s strategic priorities.

  • Ensure integration, collaboration, and teamwork across staff leads and units within the School.

  • Collaborate with faculty and staff leaders to build strategies that promote a community of belonging and engagement that values and respects the contributions of all members of the School community.

  1. Program Development and Evaluation
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to develop new programs, initiatives, and partnerships that align with the School’s strategic goals and priorities.

  • Coordinate the evaluation of the School’s progress toward strategic goals and initiatives.

  • Coordinate the evaluation of existing programs and initiatives, using data-driven insights to assess their impact and effectiveness.

  • Make recommendations for program enhancements, modifications, or discontinuations based on evaluation findings and emerging needs.

  • Assist with Council on Social Work Education re-accreditation process.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s in social work or a related field with five (5) years demonstrated experience in administration, strategic planning, and/or operations management within a complex organization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in social work or closely related field.

  • Previous experience working in higher education and large research universities and exposure to academic administration.

  • Ability to think collaboratively and strategically, solve complex problems, and adapt to changing circumstances.

  • Knowledge of social work education, practice, and research, with a commitment to social work values and ethics.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

  • Organized and methodical with excellent follow-through.

  • Demonstrated experience in program development and evaluation.

  • Advanced written, oral, and presentation skills to effectively present complex information and influence outcomes to audiences at all levels.

  • Proven track record of increased responsibilities.

  • Commitment to fostering a healthy work environment focused on belonging and engagement.
