Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado, is the nation's primary laboratory for research, development, and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The NREL mission is to develop renewable energy and energy efficient technologies and practices, advance related science and engineering, and transfer knowledge and innovation to address the nation’s energy and environmental goals.

The Renewable Resources and Enabling Sciences Center at NREL has an internship opening withing the Polymer Science and Engineering group. The position is for full-time work on-site at NREL.

The ideal candidate will be available for a one-year internship commitment, immediately post-undergraduate completion. This intern will provide researchers within our group the support necessary to safely achieve their cutting-edge research - ranging from reaction discovery for plastic depolymerization and valorization to polymer synthesis. The successful candidate will work on a project enabling Textile Circularity within the NREL Westgate program ( https://www.nrel.gov/west-gate/cohort-1.html ).

The intern will perform hands-on tasks and experimentation in a laboratory setting including:

  • Reaction design and development

  • Benchtop wet chemistry at the milligram to kilogram scale

  • Operation of analytical instrumentation

  • Batch and flow reactor operation

  • • organic synthesis

The ability to conduct laboratory experiments with minimal supervision, with the utmost regard to safety is required. Adaptability and an aptitude for learning are critical in this role. Basic Qualifications

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.

Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.


Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.

Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated general laboratory experience and exposure to analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, or biochemistry

  • Ability to learn quickly

  • Excellent time management skills

  • Ability to work well with a variety of personality types with various levels of technical backgrounds

  • Demonstrated experience following Standard Lab Safety Procedures and setting a safe example

  • Willingness to take direction and work independently to support team goals

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates are expected to have completed a bachelor’s degree in 2023 or early 2024 and begin an in-person, full-time internship for a 1-year commitment post-graduation.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $38,300 - $61,300

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.

Benefits Summary

Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.
